The colonel could return to Yellowknife

NNSL/File photo Work crews carefully strap down the Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket after they had removed it from the pole in front of the Yellowknife restaurant yesterday morning. The dismantling of the iconic symbol is one of the first steps in converting the KFC outlet into the “Lenny Burger” which is to happen later this year. After almost 50 years, the Jason family, owners of the KFC restaurant decided to end their relationship with the 'Colonel” and strike out on their own.

Tongues have been wagging about the possible return of Kentucky Fried Chicken to the city.

Those rumours could be answered as soon as today, when the agenda for Monday's Municipal Services Committee meeting is released. On it will be details of a request to permit three fast food restaurants to be built on 251 Old Airport Rd. – a vacant lot behind Northland Utilities Ltd

While not confirmed by press time, it is widely rumoured those businesses are KFC, Taco Bell and Starbucks.

It was big news in Yellowknife in the summer of 2015 when Kentucky Fried Chicken kicked the bucket after 48 years in the city.

In the days leading up to the closure, the store delivered 29 cases of chicken, with each case holding 10 bags that contained 18 pieces, adding up to 5,220 pieces in total. All of it was gone in less than 36 hours.

KFC was shipped all over the territory by fans of the secret recipe coated bird.

Since then, Mary Brown’s fried chicken has opened here. On opening day, people waited up to two hours to try the chicken, causing a line of cars to stretch down Borden Drive.

Two is better than one for job training

Kellett Communications and momentum training services have teamed up to provide an enhanced on-the-job education for northern workers, including GNWT employees, stated a Kellett Communications news release.

The two companies are joining forces after being awarded a contract from the Department of

Municipal and Community Affairs to redevelop curriculum for the Recreation Leaders Certificate Program.

This means changes to core services the department provides to their business partners including consumer engagement, digital applications and marketing strategies.

“A key priority in joining forces is to ensure the continuity of Momentum’s commitment to providing quality training services, relevant to northern business and government,” stated company president William Kellett in the release.

Coast Fraser Tower going full apartment

Folks looking for new spaces to rent could be happy to hear the Coast Fraser Tower is converting to a full apartment complex.

Neither the manager at Coast Fraser Tower nor the property owners – Midwest Property Management could be reached for comment before press-time.

However a recent media report indicated the building's 58 hotel rooms will close down on July 15 as the owners prepare to renovate what was the city's first high-rise building, built in 1970.

The tower's website also ends bookings for hotel rooms in mid-July.
