The Dettah Ice Road closed for the season this morning at 10 a.m.

NNSL file photo. The Dettah ice road is now closed for the season due to “deteriorating conditions.”

The Department of Infrastructure reminded residents this morning that it is both unsafe and illegal to drive on closed winter roads.

The department announced yesterday that the road could close within the next 24 hours “due to rapidly deteriorating conditions.”

The possible closure comes earlier than the 20-year average of April 16, according to data collected by the department.

This year marks the second earliest closure of the ice road since 1993. The previous record was set in 2017 when the road closed on April 7.
