A Yellowknife man with a long record of theft convictions is back behind bars after police say the 36-year-old stole items from a city business.

Yellowknife Mounties responded to a report about a suspected break-in at a downtown business around 10:15 p.m. Tuesday night.

When Mounties arrived at the scene of the Franklin Avenue and 50th Street business, officers found the store's front window had been smashed. It also appeared items from the store had been stolen, according to a news release issued Wednesday morning.

Thomas Avery was arrested "a short time later," say RCMP.

Avery is charged with:

  • Two counts of theft under $5,000
  • one count of failing to comply with his probation officer
  • one count of mischief equal or under $5,000
  • one count of break and enter

He remains in custody.
