Volunteers from Yellowknife Food Rescue served up a pancake breakfast with strawberries and sausages. Winners of a draw received grocery store gift cards as a token of appreciation.

Margaret Henderson who volunteers with Food Rescue is one of the 20 volunteers who put on the breakfast.

Last year, Yellowknife Food Rescue brought in 154,000 kilograms of food to be distributed to schools, shelters, and organizations that help families, she said.

“Food rescue's premise is to cut down on food waste so no person goes hungry and to match food to hunger,” said Henderson.

“When I go to food rescue, I always feel good,” she said.

In a room full of volunteers, it's not hard to find people who are passionate about giving back to their community.

Dawn Lacey volunteers her time to provide music programming to seniors and youth at Avens Manor.

“I think communities are healthier when they sing together. I think it makes the world a better place. As most volunteers would tell you, you get as much or more than you give,” said Lacey.

“You infinitely become richer because of the experience,” she said.
